Weight control, fitness or simply heredity

It could be from lack of weight control or fitness, or simply heredity. Liposuction might be the best option for getting those stubborn fat deposits removed.

Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of your body by removing excess fat deposits. This can improve your body contours and proportion. It can be used in any area on your face or body that does not respond to diet or exercise.

What parts of the body can be treated with liposuction?

Virtually any parts of your face or body that have excess fat deposits can be treated, including:

  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Upper arms and thighs
  • Breast or chest area
  • Inner knees, calves and ankles
  • Back
  • Abdomen and waist

Liposuction can be performed alone. But, in many cases, it is used with other plastic surgery procedures, such as face lifts , breast reductions, and tummy tucks.

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. Proper nutrition and exercise are key to maintaining the benefits of liposuction.

Will liposuction get rid of my cellulite?

No, it is not an effective treatment forcellulite, the dimpled skin that typically appears on the thighs, hips and buttocks. It is an ideal procedure for permanently reshaping your body contours where excess fat deposits create areas that are disproportionately large in an otherwise balanced figure.

How do I know if liposuction is right for me?

If you are within 30% of your ideal weight, have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone, you are a good candidate for liposuction.  If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or have had a previous surgery to the areas you want to have treated, Dr. Guarda has specialized protocols for your care.

What should I expect at my appointment?

At your first consultation, Dr. Guarda, will evaluate you and learn what you want to achieve, including an evaluation of your skin tone and elasticity, as well as your fat density and distribution. She will explain how she can help improve your body contours, share your options and recommend a course of treatment to meet your goals. Dr. Guarda will answer all your questions in a pressure-free environment; so, you may want to write down your questions and bring them with you to the appointment. Be prepared to discuss your:

  • Health history

  • Medications (over the counter and prescription)

  • Honest expectations from your procedure

Is liposuction safe?

As with any surgery, there are risks. There are steps you can take to help assure your safety:

  • Choose a plastic surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Have your liposuction performed at an accredited surgical facility
  • A facility can be office-based or at an ambulatory center
  • Follow your pre-op and post-op instructions

Dr. Guarda will discuss the risks and answer any questions you have. All liposuction techniques require incisions in or near the area to be suctioned – in some cases the incisions are so small that no stitches are needed. A cannula is used to loosen excess fat. The fat is then removed using a surgical vacuum or syringe for small, very isolated areas. When fat grafting is performed the fat is used to fill in wrinkles or hollow areas of the face or depressions in the face or body. Dr. Guarda will carefully explain your liposuction procedure.

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost varies based on your unique needs. After your initial consultation, the staff at Plastic Surgery Specialist of Virginia will discuss the fees associated with your individual procedure and share financing options available to you. What happens after surgery? After your liposuction, a compression garment or elastic bandages may cover treatment areas to help control swelling and compress your skin to your new body contours. Small temporary drains remove excess fluid. You will get instructions for:

  • Caring for the surgical site and special concerns to look for
  • Medications
  • Your follow-up appointment with Dr. Guarda

Experiencing swelling, numbness, soreness, bruising or discomfort is normal.  Medication will help control these symptoms. Resume normal light activity as soon as possible. This can help prevent blood clots and other complications. Initial wound healing may take 5 – 10 days. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling reduces. It may take several months for swelling to fully go away. As it does, your new contours will continue to develop. As long as you maintain your weight, eat healthfully and get regular exercise, your fabulous new body should reflect the healthy, lean look you want.
